How to use

  1. Drop your clip onto the Audio file box, or click it and pick one. MP3, WAV, M4A, OGG and FLAC all decode, and a small player shows up underneath for a quick listen before you commit.
  2. Choose an output format. WAV and FLAC come back lossless. M4A and Opus are compressed, and every lossy pass shaves a little off the top, which makes them a poor choice if the file is heading back through here later.
  3. Press Reverse & download. A progress bar tracks the encode, and there is a Cancel button beside it if you change your mind halfway.
  4. Play the result, then click Download. It saves as reversed.wav, reversed.m4a, or whichever extension goes with the format you picked.

What reversing does to your file

Backmasking, reverse cymbals, that whoosh right before a drop. All of them come from one trick: reading a sound file from the end back to the beginning. That is what this reverse audio tool does, sample by sample, with nothing added and nothing guessed at. A three-minute stereo track at 44.1 kHz holds close to 15.9 million samples, and every one of them gets put back in the opposite order before anything is written out.

Output goes to M4A, WAV, Opus, or FLAC, chosen from the row of buttons above the Reverse & download control. WAV and FLAC stay lossless, which matters if the same file is going to get flipped more than once. M4A and Opus are much smaller and perfectly fine for something you only plan to listen to or post. One reverse cymbal, start to finish

Say you have a three-second crash cymbal sitting at 48 kHz stereo. Load it, switch the output to WAV, press Reverse & download. What comes back is reversed.wav: same three seconds, same 48 kHz, except the long decay now builds forwards and slams into the strike at the very end.

Line that final frame up with the downbeat of your chorus and you have the swell dance records have leaned on since the eighties. Because you exported WAV rather than M4A, you can reverse the same file again later without stacking a lossy encode on top of it.

Good to know

  • There is no region selector. Whatever you load gets flipped from end to end, all of it.
  • The clip is decoded into memory in one go. Float samples run 4 bytes apiece, so five minutes of 44.1 kHz stereo sits at roughly 106 MB before the reversed copy even exists. An hour-long recording will make a phone sweat.
  • Reversed speech is a party trick and nothing more. Anyone who suspects it can run the file back through here and read the words straight off.

Frequently asked questions

Does reversing change the pitch?

It does not. The sample rate is written out unchanged, so a 440 Hz tone is still 440 Hz afterwards. What changes is the shape of a sound over time. A piano note that used to open with the hammer strike and decay away now swells up into that strike at the very end.

Why is there no MP3 option?

MP3 encoding needs a licensed encoder, and there is not one bundled here. You get M4A, WAV, Opus and FLAC instead. M4A plays anywhere MP3 plays and usually sounds better at the same file size.

If I reverse a file twice, do I get the original back?

In sample order, yes, and the length and sample rate come back identical. Quality is a separate question. Two trips through M4A or Opus stack two lossy encodes on each other, which you will hear on cymbals and reverb tails. Stay on WAV or FLAC for a round trip.

Can I reverse just the last few seconds of a song?

Not from this page. Cut the section you want in the Audio Cutter, bring that shorter file back here, reverse it, then place it where you need it in your editor.

What does reversed speech actually sound like?

Mostly unintelligible. Consonants lose the sharp attack that makes them readable, so words turn into a slurred vowel soup. Music holds up far better, because a sustained note played backwards still sounds like a note, just with the decay arriving ahead of the hit.

How long a file can I reverse?

There is no fixed cap written into the tool. The real ceiling is your device's memory, since the whole thing is decoded to floating-point samples before a single one moves. A laptop handles album-length files without complaint; a phone loaded with an hour of lecture audio may not.

Does a stereo file stay stereo?

Each channel is reversed on its own and the two stay in step, so the left and right image survives intact, just running backwards. Mono goes in and mono comes out.
