Or pick a festival

Festival dates come from Google's public holiday calendars, last refreshed Monday, October 19, 2026; they run to December 2031.

How to use

  1. Set the Date, and add a Time such as 09:30 when the exact hour matters. Blank means midnight at the start of the day.
  2. Or skip the typing: search the festival list under the fields and press a name, which fills in its next date and names the countdown for you.

About this tool

A countdown to a date needs one thing from you, which is the date. Type it into the Date box and the dial answers at once: the number of whole days left is the big figure, and the hours, minutes and seconds tick on the line beneath it. There is no Start button. The seconds are already moving.

Leave the Time box empty and it counts to midnight at the very start of that day.

Under the fields sits a list of what is coming: well over a hundred festivals from the Christian, Hindu, Islamic and Jewish calendars and the US holidays, each row already showing how many days are left. Type into the search box to narrow it, down to single days such as Hanukkah (Day 5), and press a name to count down to it. Festivals that move with the moon are dated from Google's public holiday calendars, refreshed weekly, and the list says how far ahead those dates run. Birthdays you type yourself, for reasons that hopefully need no explaining.

The line under the figure spells the target out in full, weekday included. Useful when the thing you actually care about is whether the deadline lands on a Saturday. The figure counts whole 24-hour days that are left, so on the evening before it reads 0 with the hours still running beneath it. On the day itself the countdown keeps going to midnight, or to the time you set, and says it is today.

A label of up to 60 characters shows on that line and in the tab title. Copy share link packs the date, the time and the label into the URL, or, for a festival picked from the list, a short link that rolls on to next year's date by itself. Fullscreen throws the dial onto the whole screen if you have a spare monitor to spend on it. Nothing else is kept between visits, which makes the link the thing worth saving.

Good to know

  • It counts down and stops. Once the moment passes, the figure rests at 0 and the page says the date has arrived or has passed. For time since something, the date difference calculator counts in both directions.
  • Nothing is stored between visits. Reload with a bare URL and the fields are empty again, so copy the share link for any countdown you want back later.

Questions that come up

How many days until Christmas this year?

Search for Christmas and press it, or open ?event=christmas. It fills in 25 December of whichever year comes next, and on Christmas Day itself it stays on this year and counts the hours left in the day. Every festival in the list behaves the same way.

Why does the figure say 0 the evening before?

The figure counts complete 24-hour days remaining, not calendar days. At 6pm the night before, six hours are left, so the figure reads 0 and the line beneath it reads 6h 00m 00s. The spoken announcement follows the same figure.

Can I count down to a specific hour, like a 9:30 exam?

Put 09:30 into the Time box and the countdown lands on that minute. Blank counts to 00:00 at the start of the date, which suits a birthday and is useless for a flight.

Whose clock does it read, mine or a server's?

Yours. The date and time you type are read as local time, and the day count matches the calendar on the device in front of you. A machine with the wrong clock gives a wrong answer, and that is the one thing that trips this page up.

Can I send someone the same countdown?

Copy share link builds a URL holding the date, the time if you set one, and the label. Open it anywhere and the identical countdown is running. A festival picked from the list copies as its own short link instead, so ?event=christmas is what lands on the clipboard, and it rolls on to next Christmas rather than expiring.
