Lorem Ipsum Generator

A lorem ipsum generator drawing on a 63-word Latin bank, with sentences of 5 to 14 words and up to 100 units per run.

Output

Every control rebuilds the text as you change it; Generate again redraws the words with the same settings.

Generate

How to use

  1. Choose Paragraphs, Sentences or Words under Generate. Paragraphs is where it starts.
  2. Set Count. It takes 1 through 100 and rewrites the text as soon as the number changes.
  3. Untick “Start with Lorem ipsum…” if you would rather not have the famous line at the front, and tick HTML output if you want <p> tags around it.
  4. Press Generate again for another shuffle, then Copy to take the text, or a paragraph's own copy button to take just that one.

How the text gets built

Three paragraphs with the opening line switched on is what the page loads with, so there is already text on the page before you touch a control. Change the count and it rebuilds as you type. Click a different unit and it rebuilds. Every control on the page regenerates the text, which leaves Generate again for the times you want a fresh shuffle of settings you have already chosen.

The vocabulary is 63 Latin words, the ones every lorem ipsum generator draws on, running from lorem and ipsum down to laborum. Sentences are assembled by pulling from that bank at random: somewhere between 5 and 14 words, first letter capitalised, full stop on the end. A paragraph is 3 to 6 of those sentences. None of it is grammatical, and no phrase from the original passage survives except the opening line.

Leave “Start with Lorem ipsum…” ticked and what happens next depends on the unit. In Paragraphs the canonical sentence is stuck to the front of the first paragraph, so paragraph one runs 4 to 7 sentences while the others stay at 3 to 6. In Sentences it becomes the whole first sentence. In Words it overwrites the first eight words with lorem ipsum dolor sit amet consectetur adipiscing elit, comma dropped, and picks at random from there.

Tick HTML output and the wrapping follows the unit as well. Paragraph output comes back as one <p> per paragraph, each on its own line, which pastes into a template as separate elements. Sentences and words come back inside a single <p>, because there is only one block of text to wrap.

Count takes 1 to 100. Type 150 and you get 100, but not quietly: the field turns red and says it made 100, and the count line says 150 was asked for. A single word fills a button label. A hundred paragraphs is several thousand words, which is usually enough to find out what an article template does when a writer overruns. Copy takes the whole block, and when there is more than one paragraph each gets its own numbered copy button for templates that want them one at a time.

Two lines for a card component

A card needs a short summary under its title. Switch to Sentences, set Count to 2, leave the opening ticked, and you get “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit.” followed by one random sentence, both on the same line.

Press Generate again a few times and only the second sentence moves, because the first is pinned by the checkbox. That second one lands anywhere between 5 and 14 words, and the count line reads out the words and characters of every draw, so the spread is a number rather than a guess. If the card holds on the short draw and breaks on the long one, you have found the bug before the copy arrives.

Good to know

  • Every change reshuffles the words and there is no seed to type in, so one set of settings never gives you the same text twice. Paste a block somewhere of your own if a reviewer needs to compare two screenshots carrying identical filler.

Frequently asked questions

What does Lorem Ipsum actually mean?

Nothing you can translate. The words are genuine Latin, taken from Cicero's de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum of 45 BC, but a printer scrambled the passage in the 1500s and the sense went with it. The lack of meaning is the point: a reviewer who cannot read the words ends up looking at the layout.

Can I get it wrapped in <p> tags?

Tick HTML output. In Paragraphs mode each paragraph arrives inside its own <p> on a separate line, so a five-paragraph run pastes into a template as five elements. Sentences and words get one <p> around the whole thing, since they come out as a single block.

How long is one generated paragraph?

Three to six sentences, each of 5 to 14 words, so anywhere from about 15 to 84. The count line gives the exact words and characters of whatever was just made. The first paragraph runs longer whenever the opening line is switched on, because that sentence is added to a full paragraph rather than replacing part of it.

Why does the text change every time I touch a control?

Generation is wired to all of them, not just the button. Typing in Count, clicking a unit, and flipping either checkbox each rebuild the text from scratch. Copy the block out first if you have one you like and want to keep it.

What is the most I can generate in one go?

A hundred of whichever unit is selected. A hundred words is a short paragraph, a hundred sentences is a solid wall of text, and a hundred paragraphs runs to several thousand words, which is past the point where most layouts have already shown you their weak spot.

Should I use filler text at all, or wait for the real copy?

Real copy wins once it exists, because its actual length and tone are part of the design. Filler earns its keep before that: checking a grid, a line length, or how a heading sits over a block of text. Swap it out the moment there is something real to drop in.

Do you have Greek, Cyrillic, or the joke generators?

No, only the traditional Latin-derived text. If you need to see how a layout handles another script, use this for the shape and then paste real sample text from that language over the top, since character widths and word lengths are what you would be testing.

Why is my first paragraph longer than all the others?

The canonical opening sentence is prepended to an ordinary paragraph instead of standing in for one, so paragraph one carries an extra sentence. Untick “Start with Lorem ipsum…” and every paragraph gets built the same way.
