PDF to JPG & PNG

Convert PDF to JPG or PNG at 1x, 2x or 3x resolution, one image per page. Narrow it to a range like 1-3, 5 and take the results singly or as one ZIP.

The pages this run will draw

Drop a PDF and the first pages it will draw show here.

PDF

Drop a PDF here

It opens here; the images are named and sized before you convert

Format

PNG is exact on text and line art and large on a scan; JPEG at 0.92 is far smaller on a photograph and softens text a little.

Resolution

Pixel sizes are read from this file's own page box.

How to use

  1. Put the PDF into the PDF box, either by dropping it there or by pressing Choose file. Its page count and page size appear on the file card.
  2. Leave Pages empty for the whole document, or narrow it. 1-3, 5 takes four pages; 4- runs from page four to the last one. The list below names every image it will make.
  3. Set Format and Resolution. PNG at 2x suits text and line art; JPEG keeps a scanned album from ballooning, and the 300 dpi tile is the one a print shop asks for.
  4. Press Convert. A long run can be cancelled and keeps the pages already drawn. Then Download all, or take any image on its own with its Preview and Save.

How the rendering works

A screenshot of a PDF page gives you whatever your monitor happened to show, soft edges and all. Converting PDF to JPG or PNG here draws each page again from the file itself, at the pixel size you ask for, so anyone zooming in still sees clean type. You get one image per page, with the words and the artwork flattened together the way they would print.

The file opens the moment it lands, so every image is named and sized before anything is drawn. Format is PNG, which is lossless and keeps transparency, or JPEG, encoded at quality 0.92 and far smaller on a photo-heavy page. Resolution is four tiles, each with its own numbers for your file: 1x at 72 dpi, 2x at 144, 3x at 216, and 300 dpi for print. Pages takes a range, and the field says what it means against your real pages. When the pages are scanned photographs, the tool notices, picks JPEG and the tile nearest the scan's own resolution, and says so.

Three pages out of a twelve-page invoice

Say invoice.pdf runs to 12 pages and you need the first three for a chat thread. Type 1-3 into Pages and the list names invoice-01.png to invoice-03.png at 1191 × 1684 pixels each before you press anything. Leave Format on PNG and Resolution on 2x, then press Convert 3 pages to PNG.

Because more than one image came out, Download all (ZIP) hands you invoice-images.zip, and each image also keeps its own Preview and Save. Numbers are padded to the width of the page count, so a 12-page file gets two digits and a 120-page file gets three. Export page 2 on its own and it saves directly as invoice-02.png with no archive around it.

Good to know

  • Whole pages come out, not the individual photographs sitting inside the PDF. If you want an embedded JPEG back at its own resolution, this is not the tool that digs it out.
  • The output is pixels. Text that was selectable in the PDF stops being selectable, and getting characters back again means running the image through OCR.
  • Pixels add up fast. Every page at 300 dpi is about 8.7 megapixels on A4, so the page warns before a run that size, and a phone does better with a lower resolution or a range.

Frequently asked questions

How do I turn a PDF into a JPG?

Load the file, switch Format to JPEG, then convert. Each selected page is written as a .jpg at quality 0.92, high enough that you have to look hard for artefacts. Choose PNG instead when the page is mostly text or line art.

Which pages will I get if I leave the Pages box empty?

All of them, in order. That box exists only to narrow things down. It takes single numbers, spans, and open-ended spans, and it sorts and de-duplicates whatever you type, so 3,1,2,2-3 quietly becomes pages 1 to 3.

What does the resolution setting actually change?

The number of pixels the page is drawn into. PDF pages are measured in points, 72 to the inch, so 1x is 72 dpi and an A4 page lands at 596 by 842 pixels. 2x is 144 dpi, 3x is 216, and the 300 dpi tile draws A4 at 2481 by 3508. Each tile shows its own pixel size and megapixels for your file.

PNG or JPEG for a scanned page?

JPEG, nearly always. A scan is a photograph of paper, full of faint noise that PNG stores faithfully and expensively. Keep PNG for pages built from flat colour and sharp edges, where it both compresses better and stays exact.

Can I get every page in one download?

Yes. Convert two or more pages and Download all (ZIP) takes over from Convert. It packs the rendered files under a name built from your PDF, so report.pdf gives you report-images.zip, and the strip names that archive before the run.

Why did it refuse my page range?

The box is strict about a few things. Page 0 does not exist, a backwards span such as 5-2 is rejected, and anything that is not digits, hyphens and commas holds Convert with the reason under the field. Overshooting the end is fine though: ask for 1-99 in a three-page file and the field says 99 reads as 3.

Do the file names tell me which page is which?

Each image is named after the PDF with its page number appended, zero-padded to the length of the page count. Page 7 of a 120-page document becomes report-007.png, which keeps everything sorting correctly in any file manager.
