Salary to Hourly Calculator
Salary to hourly, or hourly back to salary: type one figure, mark which period it belongs to, and the other four fill themselves in.
Per hour
The same salary, two divisors
How to use
- Put your pay into Amount. It opens holding 50,000, so clear that first.
- Set “This amount is” to the period your figure belongs to: Per year, Per month, Per week, Per day or Per hour.
- Bring Hours per week, Weeks per year and Days per week in line with the job you actually do. The answer and its three cards redraw on every keystroke, and the line under the answer names the hours and working days it divided by.
About this tool
Going from salary to hourly is one division. The argument is always about the divisor. Type a single number into Amount, tell the tool which period that number belongs to, and the other four periods work themselves out. It runs the other way with no extra effort, so a contract quoted at 25 an hour becomes a yearly figure the moment you mark the amount as Per hour.
Everything hangs off three schedule fields: Hours per week, Weeks per year and Days per week, which open at 40, 52 and 5. That is the standard American full-time year of 2,080 hours, and it's why a 52,000 salary lands on 25.00 an hour. Drop the weeks to 50 because two of yours are unpaid, and the hourly figure climbs, since the same money now arrives in less working time. Every number shown is gross pay, before tax and before anything your employer takes out at source.
Weighing a 68,000 salary against a 45-an-hour contract
The offer letter says 68,000 a year on a 37.5-hour week with paid leave. Type 68000, leave the period on Per year, and change Hours per week to 37.5 with weeks and days left at 52 and 5. The answer settles at 34.87 an hour, the cards at 5,666.67 a month and 1,307.69 a week, and Per day reads 261.54 because the year holds 260 working days at five a week.
The competing contract pays 45 an hour for the same 37.5 hours, but the agency only pays for weeks worked, and after leave, public holidays and a fortnight between engagements that is 46 of them. Enter 45, mark it Per hour and set weeks to 46: 77,625.00 a year and 6,468.75 a month. Then put the salary back in with weeks still at 46. The hour now reads 39.42, and a table under the answer sets it beside the 34.87 of a fully paid year: 39.42 is what the contract has to clear on time alone before pension and health cover come into the comparison.
Good to know
- Gross pay only. Income tax, social security or national insurance, pension and health cover sit outside what this does.
- Overtime earns the same here as anything else. Hour forty-one is worth exactly what hour one is worth.
- A month is a twelfth of the year, not four weeks and not the working days in that particular month, so the monthly card can differ slightly from a payslip that counts days.
- Bonuses, commission, shift premiums and equity are not inputs. Fold them into the annual amount yourself if you want them in the comparison.
- No currency is attached anywhere. Figures come out with two decimals and the symbol is yours to imagine.
Common pay questions
How much an hour is 50,000 a year?
On a 40-hour week across 52 weeks it works out at 24.04 an hour, because 50,000 spread over 2,080 hours is 24.038. That is what the tool shows on load, alongside 4,166.67 a month and 961.54 a week. Change the hours or the weeks and the hourly figure moves with them.
What does 25 an hour come to per year?
52,000 on a full-time schedule: 25 multiplied by 2,080 hours. Enter 25, set the period to Per hour, and Per year becomes the answer. If your week is 37.5 hours rather than 40, the same rate comes to 48,750 instead.
Should I put 52 weeks or fewer?
Use 52 when your holiday is paid, because you are earning during it. Use fewer when it isn't. A contractor taking three unpaid weeks should enter 49, which raises the hourly rate needed to reach the same annual pay by about 6%.
How much of this will I actually take home?
Less, and how much less depends entirely on where you live and file. These are gross figures on purpose, since that is how offers get quoted and how two of them can be compared honestly. For net pay you want a tax calculator built for your own country.
I work a compressed four-day week. Which cards change?
Only the daily one. The hourly figure divides the year by hours, and 37.5 hours over four days is the same 1,950 hours as over five, so 68,000 still reads 34.87 an hour and 1,307.69 a week. The daily card divides the year by working days instead, and 208 of them rather than 260 lifts it from 261.54 to 326.92. Set Days per week to 4 and watch that card alone move.
Why does my employer divide by 2,087 hours, not 2,080?
Forty hours over 52 weeks is 2,080, and that is the divisor printed under the answer. The US federal government uses 2,087 instead, because the calendar averages that many weekday hours a year over a 28-year cycle once the odd extra weekday is counted. On 50,000 it makes 23.96 an hour rather than 24.04. To match a figure built on 2,087, set Weeks per year to 52.175 and the two agree.
How do I weigh a salaried offer against a contract rate?
Convert the salary to hourly on your real schedule, then set the weeks down to whatever the contract actually pays for. With fewer than 52 weeks the page draws both schedules side by side, and the hour in the second column is the one to read. That second number is the rate a contractor needs just to break even on time, before health cover, pension and paid leave enter the picture. The amount, period and schedule all ride in the page URL, so the comparison is one paste away from whoever you're negotiating with.
