How to use
- Drop the crooked document into PDF file. The page count shows up underneath it and the thumbnail strip loads below.
- Choose Left 90°, Right 90° or Flip 180°. Right 90° is preselected, so upside-down scans are the case where you have to change it.
- Leave Pages blank to turn the whole document, or narrow it down: click thumbnails to toggle them, or type a range like 1-3, 5. Typing updates the highlights and clicking updates the box, so the two stay in step.
- Press Rotate & download. What comes back is your filename with -rotated on the end.
How this works
A scan that came out sideways is the usual reason to want to rotate a PDF, and the whole control set is three buttons: Left 90°, Right 90° and Flip 180°. Right 90° is already selected when the page loads. Drop your file in and the page count appears under the picker, with a thumbnail strip below the Pages box that renders as you scroll rather than all at once. Leave Pages empty and everything turns. Click thumbnails, or type a range like 2-4, 7, and only those pages move.
What actually gets written is the rotation entry on each page, a number the PDF format already carries. Nothing is re-rendered, so page dimensions and selectable text come through untouched, and the turn travels with the document into whatever reader opens it next. The part that catches people out is that the turn is added to the rotation the page already had. A page sitting at 90° that you turn right 90° arrives at 180° rather than going back to zero.
A run, start to finish
Say you scanned a 12-page contract and pages 3 through 6 went into the feeder the wrong way round, so the text reads bottom to top. Load the PDF and 12 pages appears under the picker. Right 90° is already the selected direction, which is the one that fixes bottom-to-top text. Type 3-6 into Pages and those four thumbnails light up, so you can check you picked the right ones before committing to anything.
Press Rotate & download. The status line switches to Working and then to a done message, and contract.pdf comes back as contract-rotated.pdf with four pages upright and the other eight exactly as they were.
Good to know
- Turns come in 90° steps. A scan sitting five degrees off square needs deskewing, which is a different job and not one this does.
- One direction per run. If page 2 wants a left turn and page 5 wants a right, that is two passes, or a trip to Organize PDF where every page has its own rotate button.
- Password-protected files stop at the door, because the PDF library refuses to open an encrypted document. Strip the password with Unlock PDF and come back.
Frequently asked questions
How do I rotate a PDF so it stays rotated?
Pick a direction, decide whether it applies to every page or a selection, and download. The turn is baked into the file you get back, so it holds in Preview, Acrobat, Chrome and anything else. Rotating inside a viewer without saving is the thing that resets, and that is a different button in a different program.
Can I rotate a single page and leave the rest?
Type its number into Pages, or click its thumbnail. Only the pages listed there get turned and everything else is left exactly as it was. The box takes lists and ranges together, so 1-3, 5, 9 works fine.
Why did my page land at 180° when I only turned it once?
Because the turn is added to whatever rotation the page already carried, and scanners write a rotation onto the page far more often than people expect. If the page was already at 90° and you turned it right 90°, then 180° is the correct sum. Two more right turns bring it back around to where it started.
Does the text stay selectable after a turn?
It does. Page content is not touched at all, and only the rotation number on the page changes. Text stays selectable and searchable, images keep their original resolution, page size is unchanged, and no watermark is added anywhere.
Will bookmarks and form fields survive?
Yes. The file is opened, the rotation on each page is set, and the same document is saved back out rather than pages being copied into a fresh one, so outlines, form fields, annotations and metadata all come along with it.
Is there a page limit or a file size cap?
No cap is written into the tool. The real ceiling is memory, since the whole document is held in the tab while it is rewritten. Where a very long file gets sluggish is the thumbnail strip, and that renders lazily as you scroll, so you can ignore it and type a range instead.
When should I use Organize PDF instead of this?
The moment you need pages in a different order, or want to drop some of them, or need different pages turned different ways. Organize PDF lays every page out as a draggable card with its own rotate and delete controls. If straightening a scan is the whole job, staying here is quicker.
