How to use
- Drop the document into the Document box. Its first page renders with CONFIDENTIAL already stamped across it, which is a quick way to see whether the defaults are close enough.
- Leave The mark on Text and edit the Text box, or press Image and drop a picture in. A logo with a transparent background sits over body copy far better than a JPEG with its white rectangle.
- Size it. Text uses Size pt, from 8 to 200; a picture uses Size % of page, from 5 to 100 of the page width.
- Turn and fade it with the presets, or type the degrees and the percentage yourself. A typed figure lets the preset go, and typing a preset's value presses it again.
- Press a cell of Where it sits, or drag the mark on the page. Double-click a page to undo a drag, or press Reset to put every page back on the grid.
- Fill in Which pages if only part of the document needs marking, check the count, then press Download watermarked PDF.
About this tool
Most people who come to add a watermark to a PDF want the same stamp, and it is what loads: the word CONFIDENTIAL, bold, red, 48pt, turned 45 degrees, faint at 30% in the middle of the page. Load a file and its first page shows with the mark already on it. From there it's adjustment. Rewrite the text as DRAFT or a client name, pick from sixteen faces running from Montserrat to Merriweather to Pacifico, lift a colour off the screen with the eyedropper, or press Flat, Diagonal or Upright and Faint, Visible or Bold instead of hunting for numbers.
The page in the well is the file you are about to save. A moment after your last change the real PDF is rebuilt and re-rendered, and the figure counts the pages that will carry the mark. Where it sits is a 3 by 3 grid of the page; drag the mark on the page for anywhere else, and tick Placed by hand when page 4 needs it low and left while the rest keep the shared spot. Text the chosen face cannot draw is caught before you download: type a Hindi or Chinese word in a Latin face and the page names the missing characters and holds the file, instead of handing over a copy with nothing stamped on it.
Before you rely on it
- Treat a watermark as a label rather than a lock. Anyone with a PDF editor can lift the overlay back off, so when the point is actual control rather than signalling, add a password with Protect PDF on top of it.
- A password-protected source file is refused as soon as it is dropped, with Unlock PDF one press away. A file whose owner only restricted changes opens, and the page tells you the copy is written without those limits.
- None of the sixteen bundled faces draws Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic or emoji, and Poppins has Devanagari letters but cannot lay them out. For those scripts, make the mark an image: a PNG of the words stamps exactly as it looks.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get that big faint diagonal stamp across the middle?
You may already have it, since a fresh page starts on Centre, Diagonal and Faint. Push the size up toward 120 if you want the stamp spanning the full width of the page.
Can I put my company logo on every page instead of text?
Press Image under The mark and drop the file in. PNG, JPEG, WebP and anything else the browser can open will work; it is drawn into a PNG first so transparency survives. Size, angle, strength and position behave the same as they do for text.
Why won't it let me download my watermark in Hindi?
Because the face you picked has no letters for it, and the copy would come back with nothing where the mark should be. The page names the missing characters and lists which faces can draw them. For Devanagari, Chinese or Arabic none of the bundled faces works, so switch the mark to an image of the words.
Can I watermark just pages 1 to 3?
Type 1-3 into Which pages and the hint under it confirms pages 1, 2 and 3; the rail greys out the rest. The field takes lists and ranges mixed together, so 1-3, 7, 12 is valid, and every page you leave out passes through exactly as it arrived.
How do I drag the watermark on a phone?
A finger drag scrolls by default, which is what you want most of the time. When you need to place the stamp, choose Place under What a touch drag does and your next drag positions it instead. The grid of nine cells works with a tap and needs no dragging at all.
